Your portfolio companies report in whatever format they like. Every month you get complete, corrected, source-traceable financials for the whole book — prepared and reviewed for you, then handed over for your approval. Nobody on your team logs in to check the inputs.
Below the large funds there are hundreds of search-fund investors, independent sponsors and lower-middle-market firms, holding tens of thousands of operating companies between them. They are minority investors, so they cannot mandate a reporting template. Every month twenty or thirty companies send in whatever their bookkeeper produced — a PDF of a QuickBooks export, a workbook with last quarter still in column G, a photograph of a printed P&L. A VP of Finance opens a dozen documents per company to pull the highlights, and February is a fire drill.
Models can now read those documents. What a model cannot do on its own is clear the bar that actually matters here, which is not usually right but right, and provably so, in front of an auditor.
So we don’t claim a hundred percent accurate. We claim a hundred percent verifiable. The arithmetic is re-checked mechanically rather than read. Every figure carries the document, page and cell it came from. Anything the system isn’t sure about is held for a human instead of guessed through.
